At the end of June, very unusual weather caused by climate change occurred in Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. A cold front moved across the countries leading to a devastating loss of the chia seeds harvest. Suppliers reported to lose 50-60% of the crop after the frost buffeted the countries three times over.
Speculation about prices increased rapidly as many exporters lost a significant part of their production. As for now, it seems that Argentina and Bolivia have been most affected. However, we understand a second frost wave in Paraguay damaged around a further 30% of the crop.
Paraguay is currently facing an increasing demand from Bolivian and Mexican companies. This year, Mexico is expected to have a limited crop as farmers are currently more interested in planting agave and corn due to the attractive price levels. The market is expected to remain very volatile in the coming months.
