Last year was a complicated year for the brazilnut industry. The production of the crop dropped dramatically, which resulted in very high prices. In the past few months prices have come down again. The estimated volume of the 2018 crop is around 20.000mt, which is about 80% of a normal crop.
The harvest started mid November at a high level. Heavy rains have caused some problems in the past few weeks, as many roads in the forest were blocked. This could increase the risk of rotten nuts and aflatoxin.
Exporters have started production and will soon be shipping the first containers. There is a lot of demand from the Asian market, since Korea and China signed a free trade agreement with Peru. Korea is paying good prices, so many Peruvians are buying. Because of this high demand collectors are not yet willing to drop prices. Europe speculates on falling prices until April, but we don’t expect any big fluctuations in the next couple of weeks.
