Maca powder is still one of the most popular superfoods. It’s a dietary supplement derived from the processed tuberous root of Lepidum meyenii and well known for its nutritional benefits. The worldwide demand continues to grow, meanwhile the cultivated areas have been decreasing due to low market prices and overstocks have been depleted. Prices have continued to increase, as predicted in our last market report.
As the worldwide demand continues to grow and overstocks are now depleted, exporters expect prices to reach levels quoted in 2013, before China entered the market. We have seen prices rising rapidly in the past couple of weeks and recommend our customers to cover for the next couple of months.
The size of the maca crop is usually around 2000-3000 mt/year. This year’s harvest (which began in the month of June) hasn’t been very good, mainly due to unfavourable weather conditions. This has caused a loss of 30-40%. Our supplier thinks that prices will stabilize between USD 5,50-7,50 kg.
