The cocoa tree originates from Central America, where its fruit has been used since around 1500 BC. In the wild, a cocoa tree can reach from five to fifteen meters, but in plantations it is usually pruned to four meters high. One tree has 20 to 30 pods and each contains 25 to 50 cocoa beans.
The new crop cocoa beans for 2021 will be around 139.000 MT. This is a very good crop, despite of the rains which delay the drying of the beans, so they crop will be available a little later in the season that usual.
At Rhumveld, the cocoa products in our assortment are mostly from Peru. Peru is recognized by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) as one of the few countries in the world that produce fine cocoa with an intense, aromatic flavor profile and a slight pleasant acidity.
We offer four cacao products for different applications – nibs, liquor, butter and powder.
- Cocoa nibs
Cocoa nibs are the healthiest way to consume chocolate. They come from carefully selected cocoa beans, roasted and crushed to become crunchy little pieces, perfect to replace nuts in desserts or granola in breakfast.
- Cocoa liquor
Cocoa liquor, also known as 100% unsweetened chocolate is key ingredient for making chocolate. Our processing factory uses cutting-edge technology to roast and ground the cocoa beans transforming them into a smooth and homogenous liquor preserving their delicate flavor profile.
- Cocoa butter
Cocoa butter is the ingredient that gives fluidity and shine to chocolate. The deodorization process, which almost completely eliminates the taste and smell of chocolate, makes it a premium product used in the manufacture of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
- Cocoa powder
Cocoa powder can be used as an ingredient in bakery products, beverages, toppings, fillings, cookies, cakes, among others. Due to variations in flavor, color, fat content and pH, it’s important to find the proper type of cocoa powder for each application.

Rhumveld specialize in Organic cocoa products and UTZ-certified cocoa products. UTZ is the label for sustainable farming. The cocoa sector faces several challenged. Poor soil fertility management, aging tree stocks, improper use of chemicals and uncontrolled deforestation are threats to the sustainability of cocoa farming. At the same time farmers are faced with poor labor conditions and low income. The goal of UTZ cocoa is to create an efficient sustainability program with effective certification and traceability tools for socially and environmentally responsible cocoa production that meets the needs of both producers and markets. Currently 20% of what our supplier for cocoa beans can offer is UTZ. They see that this demand is growing this year with 10% and they expect that this will grow with 12% next year.
